LWVMI Campaign Finance Reform
Clean Money, Clean Elections-Making Democracy Work
"Making Democracy Work" is the League of Women Voters' new campaign to take our
democratic system into the 21st century. We believe that
democracy can work - that the
problems we face in our country are solvable, and that is why the League of Women Voters
of Michigan has joined the Michigan Voters for Clean Elections campaign. Although the
League never supports or opposes candidates, we do advocate on issues.
The League of Women Voters believes that the methods of financing political campaigns
should ensure the public's right to know, combat corruption and undue influence, enable
candidates to compete more
equitably for public office and promote citizen participation
in the political process.
The League's Making Democracy Work program focuses on key areas where improvements
are needed in our system: increased voter participation, greater citizen participation in
government, and improving civic education
and knowledge. However, one of the most important
areas for emphasis is
campaign finance reform.
Polls show that most Americans believe that our government is run for the benefit
of special interests rather than for the good of all the people. LWVMI President
Flora McRae said, "Our system is based on the consent of the governed, but the way campaigns
are financed is undermining public confidence
and increasing cynicism. With an energetic
grassroots campaign Michigan can
have an alternative to the present campaign finance
system and begin to
restore citizens' trust in government."
Citizens believe that elected officials are beholden to the special interests
that
help them raise enough money to get elected. Politics has become an
insiders' game,
played by politicians, consultants, special interest lobbyists
and big donors. It is
not surprising that citizens are losing confidence in
a government that is not responsive
to their concerns. The League of Women Voters believes that we need to give candidates
an option
that allows them to step away from a private money campaign system dominated
by special interests. We need to give voters an option to elect candidates who are not
subject to the special interest fundraising game.
We believe that the proposal for a clean elections initiative in
Michigan is one that citizens should and will support. Politics should be a debate about
our common destiny, not a divisive struggle among special interests.
We can create the democracy we want to have. A democracy where citizens come first.
One open to new faces, and fresh ideas. The League of Women Voters of Michigan is pleased
to join the coalition in this effort.
